Chapter 58

The thick cords of power that connected Ruwen and Xavier remained, and Ruwen had no idea how to stop it. So he focused on healing the damage instead.

Ruwen cast Thriving Trunk on Xavier, hoping to save the Celestial Remnant’s life. For the first time, Ruwen sensed the spell build in his chest, and he convulsed as the Spirit left him. It felt like every cell in his body had become a volcano, spewing lava.

The heal struck Xavier, and he snapped back to his normal straight posture. The terrible hissing of pain quieted, and he groaned.

Overlord spoke in Ruwen’s mind, not bothering to manifest in Ruwen’s vision. This is scary.

That got Ruwen’s attention. Overlord didn’t experience fear. It was the whole point of his existence.

Rami’s cries had turned to frantic calls, encouraging Xavier to wake up.

Through the intense pain, Ruwen formed a question in his mind for Overlord. How can you feel fear?

I don’t know. Maybe I’m changing. This is the first time I’m worried about dying.

What’s happening?

That power has energized your body at a molecular level. Like every cell is activated.

That explains the pain. Using Mana hurt, but that Spirit cast felt like an inferno.

Can you use Spirit again? I want to verify something.

Ruwen gritted his teeth and cast Thriving Trunk on Xavier a second time. Casting the Spirit spell turned his insides into magma.

Xavier’s groans quieted and Rami turned to Ruwen. She pointed at the thick cords of power connecting Ruwen and Xavier. “Can you break this?”

Ruwen shook his head, unable to speak out loud or muster the will to push his voice into Rami’s mind.

Interesting, Overlord said. I have an idea, but it might be bad.

Impossible, Ruwen managed.

Cast on yourself.

Dealing with the agony had slowed Ruwen’s mind, and he realized he should have done that already to relieve his pain.

Ruwen cast Thriving Trunk a third time, targeting himself.

The powerful healing spell further ignited Ruwen’s insides, and as the spell struck him, everything turned icy cold. The Spirit from the spell coursed through his body, repairing the damage. He shivered uncontrollably and hunched forward as his body absorbed the Spirit.

Rami’s voice sounded in Ruwen’s head. Are you okay? Please tell me how to help.

As the frigid shock wore off, Ruwen felt marginally better. Enough to stand up straight and stop shivering. He looked down at his chest.

The threads of power had condensed into two thick tendrils. One connected to the top of his chest, the other near his belly button. They linked him with Xavier who now glowed with a dim blue light. For the time being, it appeared they’d both survived whatever had occurred.

Ruwen mustered the strength to push his voice across the mental link with Rami. I’m fine. We need Xavier. I don’t know what’s happening.

Your heal saved his life. He’s starting to recover.

The pain in Ruwen’s body reminded him of his early Fortification attempts, especially when he wore the Suffocation gear. Remembering he’d suffered like this before, and survived, helped, and the pain faded to bearable.
